Not Mere Metaphores

These descriptions of the role of explicit monitoring in choking are not mere metaphors. Skilled, automated motor skills “run” optimally with the activation of the right hemisphere of the cerebral cortex and the inhibition of the left hemisphere. For right-handed, left-hemisphere dominate people, the right hemisphere is associated with optimum performance of complex motor skills. Left hemisphere activation is associated with analyzing, measuring, judging, and translating motor activity to verbal descriptions – explicit monitoring (Nieuwenhuys, & Oudejans, 2012; Runswick, Roca, Williams, Bezodis, & North, 2018; Winter, MacPherson, & Collins, 2014).
